Scott Valley is a beautiful location where one can find scenic ranches, old barns and historic towns. It’s always worth the drive. Whenever I pass this tree I feel compelled to stop and take a picture. The tree seems to have a classic or archetypal shape and it’s set in a working ranch environment. Mossbrae Falls is an exceptionally attractive waterfall. It’s not large in scale but it’s spectacular in beauty and a delightful reward after about a mile hike along the Sacramento River. With a height of about 50 feet and a width of close to 150 feet, the falls drop over moss and fern covered cliff walls to enter the Sacramento River below. A horse and rider is a familiar scene in Siskiyou County. The man and horse and background scenes were actually photographed in separate locations on the same day. I combined the man and horse with the high dynamic range background scene in order to make a more interesting and aesthetic image with a touch of country nostalgia that never was but could have been. When three giraffes clustered together it was an amazing mix of legs and necks. I captured the scene with the idea that I might be able to create something interesting with it. This is the “other side” of the mountain. When I am in the towns of Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir or McCloud, people often say most of my photos of Mt. Shasta are from the “other side.” I try to explain that they are the ones on the “other side” of the mountain but my explanation seems lost on them.
